Hi Daniel,
What version of the software should I download if I would like to evaluate?
http://www.bestgrade.org/software.html mentions that there should be a new
version, but without providing a link, and the old version is Excell only.

Hmm,
Last year Daniel Schier came here asking to partner with local developers.
Today I read him saying they have finished an evaluation version of a school
management software program.
Before writing this mail, I contacted some local developers who claim he met
them, I wanted to know if they had an in-put in the software he is putting
up for evaluation.
Looks like there is good information to follow on this software on how it
has been developed.

Hello Davis,
I did, indeed, visit a couple of developers around Kampala. We discussed
mainly the education system, as well as the market for management software
and a few specifications. I explained a bit about the objectives of our
project, its history, and what we are trying to develop in Uganda and the
rest of East Africa. Additionally, I visited schools in Mbarara, Kampala,
Fort Portal, as well as rural areas in order to get feedback on features and
specific needs.
The software itself is built off of our Senegal version, with significant
modification for the Ugandan system. Essentially, the software is
simple-to-use and can be adopted by the majority of schools, specifically
those without significant IT resources. Schools with greater means and more
complex needs will probably consider other products. We are looking for
developers who would be interested in making modifications for interested
schools which have the financial means for such services, and who would be
interested in doing trainings and the like. An additional benefit to
partners is that they may upsell their products to schools, if they have
financial management software, more comprehensive school management
software, or other products to offer.
The idea of offering free software is to target the greatest number of
schools possible. By my estimate there are perhaps 50 primary and secondary
schools in country using some type of management program, while the number
of schools who could adopt a program is more than 10 times that. The goal
is for schools to realize the potential and benefits of using technology
that they otherwise wouldn't.
For anybody who is interested in more information on the project they can
visit our website at www.bestgrade.org. Additionally, they may contact me
at daniel.schier@bestgrade.org.

Hello Daniel,
You sound interesting. 'Senegal education system modified for Uganda'?
What is the source of your funding for this 'goodwill' project, it looks so
big if you imagine the magnitude involved.
Those who have seen what you had last year, believe your software was not as
adequate as the locally developed software that was already being
distributed for free around the country. The chaps at www.magezi.net are
also giving out free schools management software that has not been modified
from another country's education but rather made in line with Uganda's
education system. It would really be better if we have software that is
tailored to Uganda's education institutional management and not adopted from
another country, even if it is free of charge. To an extent, could it not be
comparable to saying Uganda's education system is not as good as Senegal's.

Hi Davis,
I tend to disagree with you on the adapting statement.
When designing software, in the case for a school, about 90% of that software
will be very generic in all 183 countries in the world.
A school has classes, pupils, possibly fees, subjects, teachers, a roster and
they work more or less the same whereever you go.
Why would you start from scratch implementing these when designing software?
Just take something that works elsewhere and only apply the differences. Saves
you a whole lot of hassle.
BTW, people who want to get involved with writing opensource school management
software (slightly more complicated than bestgrade), the people at
www.schooltool.org are looking into how to adapt their quite succesfull
opensource software to the developing worlds circumstances. If you dig deep
enough into their website you can find their plans for this and how you could
get involved.

Davis,
I was about to say that you need to get familiar with the opensource
model. Open source mainly works on the idea of code reuse. As Reinier
says, you need not re-invent the wheel; you pick what is there and build
on it. Yes, in education as in Journalism, a lot of the basic things are
uniform and the only differences are cosmetic.
BTW the Magezi solution is not open source, or so it seems from reading
from their website. I would not jump to conclusions about it until I
have heard from some one who has used it or evaluated it. It would be
nice to compare it with opengrade or another SIS before giving it the
software-of-the-year award.
Cheers
Chris

Hello Chris,
Thanks for the enlightening me.
I am having to learn many new angles to software issues from your reaction
and that of Reinier, and I think many others that are to come.
It is not easy to agree that Open Source is as open as it sounds and so the
need to find out the level of openness, in order to know the background or
hidden costs, which may not be seen by the naked mind/(eye).

Davis,
I was about to say that you need to get familiar with the opensource
Cheers
Chris

Davis,
For your information, the Magezi solution is not free... as compared to this software. You have to part with some dollars to own it.

posted 10 February 2010 by Yawe Tony from email
Dear Daniel,
Thanks for sharing with us about Bestgrade and for the initiative. Recently we were contacted by a secondary school inquiring on the possibility of SionaPros developing for them a school management software from scratch, and I thought it was not really necessary, given that schools have been around for long - no need to recreate the wheel.
I just have some concrete questions regarding Bestgrade:
1. Does it have an accounting system integrated linking to school fees payments, part payment tracking, etc?
2. Does it have reports management, capable of generating termly reports per student, automatically positioning students per class / stream, etc etc.
3. On what platform is Bestgrade designed? Is it a web-based platform? PHP, JSP, Pearl, ASP?
Kindly get back to us.
Cheers,
Simon.

Davis,
For your information, the Magezi solution is not free... as compared to this software. You have to part with some dollars to own it.

Richard,
That was spot on......evaluate, advise and get involved so that something good can be got out of the whole fray.

Simon,
visit http://www.bestgrade.org/downloadv5.02ug.php download the software, evaluate it and you will have answers to all your questions
