Hi all

I have been following this thread with interest. I agree entirely with Robert Snape. Yes we are all seduced by the power and potential of the internet and the new media. There was a Medical/Health media workshop here in Sydney recently at which we were told that books, newspapers, magazines, radio and TV were all so passé; we needed to learn to get our messages out via Twitter and Facebook!

How available is the internet and the new media in the majority world, when electricity and infrastructure cannot be guaranteed. Even in India where there are more IT professionals than anywhere else and there is such an obvious and visible IT presence; the poor have very little access to computers. Mobile phones on the other hand...! I agree that we should lobby publishers and authors to make this information vastly more available and useful. Any tips on how to do this would be useful.

I know that medical students and health professionals visiting the majority world are often urged to take along their old text books and journals. How useful is this practice really for people on the ground at the receiving end?

What a fabulous comment! Exactly, how much profit from sales is there in the localities which most need the help? (Rhetorical question)
